Other animals — ruminants in particular, that eat only vegetation — have different guts that allows for interaction with certain bacteria that make B12. Our guts are comparatively simple and are not capable of this process. We probably lost this ability as we evolved from tree-dwelling primates to land dwelling hunter gatherers.
