Men: Your Sperm Count is Plummeting

And that’s a warning sign for other health problems

A paper published in November 2022 describes data from 223 international studies that reveal that sperm count across the globe has decreased by more than half over the last fifty years. According to the team of scientists who made this discovery, humanity faces a “fertility crisis.”

The situation is equally as dire in regions like Latin America, Asia and Africa as it is in Europe, North America and Australia.

You might take the view that — what with eight billion of us already on the planet — the situation is more of a solution than a problem. However, as well as being highly distressing for couples struggling to conceive, low sperm count is associated with a number of male health issues, including testicular cancer, and all-cause mortality.

“Furthermore, the decline in sperm count is paralleled by declines in testosterone and increases in testicular cancer and male genital anomalies”

Worse still, the research team, which included scientists from Israel, Denmark, Brazil, Spain, and the USA, reported that the global fall in sperm count has picked up speed since the beginning of the 21st century. From 1973 to 2000, the fall was around 1.2% per year; since 2000, it’s increased to more than 2.6% per year.

“The troubling declines in men’s sperm concentration and total sperm counts… are consistent with adverse trends in other men’s health outcomes, such as testicular cancer, hormonal disruption, and genital birth defects, as well as declines in female reproductive health,” said co-author Professir Shanna Swan in a press statement.

The first question that springs to mind is: Why?

That’s not something that this study attempted to answer. Others have, however. What has emerged from the research is that nutrition plays a critical role in sperm health, and therefore male health overall.

Save humanity. Eat well

Sperm formation, quality, and maturation are dependent on a number of nutrients and antioxidants that protect from damage. That’s good news…
